AOL USER'S QUESTIONS

I am an AOL user and I just can't seem to get the Update Modules function to import new updates to Auction Submit.

If you are not getting the update, here are a few solutions:

1. Shut down your computer and restart it. Then try again.

2. It is possible that your computer is caching the old version of the Auction Submit module files. (Cache files are copies of Web pages and files that your Web browser stores on your computer after you load them for the first time. When you go to those files again, it will check the cache to see if it has been there before. If it determines it has been there, it will load the file from your cache and display it. This speeds up the loading of Web pages but can sometimes cause problems by displaying old information.) One way to deal with this is to clear your cache files (also called "Temporary Internet Files"). Assuming you have IE 5.0, click on the Tools dropdown menu and select Internet Options. Click on the General tab, go down to the "Temporary Internet Files" section, and click on the "Delete Files" button. This should clear your browser cache. While you are here, also click on the Settings button and make sure that the "Check for newer versions of stored pages" is NOT set to "never" and click OK.

3. Are you using any software on your computer similiar to one of the "Internet Accelerator", cookie filtering, or content filtering products - or any software that sets up a "proxy server" on your computer?. Some (but there are many more)of the brand names include Intermute, Cookie Pal, Net Sonic, WebRifle, Speedconnect, NetAccelerator, Cyberpatrol, or Net Nanny. We have found that the design of this type of software includes setting up a proxy server on your computer that may have cache features which could cause this. If you have this software, you may have to disable it to get the updates to work.

4. We have also found in a few cases that AOL Parental Controls settings can cause this effect. Do you have these controls (particularly the ftp controls) set for anything other than unrestricted use?

5. If none of these work then this points to an AOL problem in which AOL is not allowing access to our server because it is not finding a previous request for this site in the server cache. On AOL when you try to connect to a non AOL server you have to go through their proxy servers. Their servers maintain cached versons of files accessed by AOL members. If you ran through all of the suggestions above, then most likely you are seeing an AOL proxy server cache problem that is precluding your update. Because of the way that the AOL proxy servers work, it may just take some period of time before the server you are connecting to refreshes and allows new connections to be cached. You may have seen this sort of effect in the past when you try to connect to a website that you know is active, but you get a message from AOL saying that the site does not exist or is down. We are working to find a way to make sure that the AOL cache is reset for these files and believe that it is only a matter or time before AOL catches up with the new version. It is also possible that this problem extends to several different servers, so that some AOL users may see the problem while others may not --depending on which server you are routed to.

6.Another AOL user had an interesting solution -- He joined Net Zero, logged on, and got the update. Net Zero is one of several new programs where you can get free dial up access to the internet. They have made this extremely easy. You just go to http://www.netzero.com/, sign up, download a small file, and then log on with a dial up account. After you log on try the Update Modules function again.

7. If all else fails you could download and reinstall Auction Submit. The current download has all updates included. If you are considering reinstalling Auction Submit, BE SURE TO BACKUP YOUR DATABASE before you do this. Here is how: All auction data is stored in a file called storage.mdb which is located in your AuctionSubmit folder that is in your Program Files folder (assuming that you used the default location when you initially installed the software.) Just copy the entire storage.mdb file and paste it into an alternate location (outside of the AuctionSubmit folder) If you reinstall Auction Submit, you can paste a copy of the old storage.mdb file that you backed up into the new AuctionSubmit folder and overwrite the new (empty) version of this file.
